Scottish Historical Rifle Long Range Championships

The first long range championships was held at the magnificent Glen Tilt Range by courtesy of the West Atholl Rifle Club. The meeting was most successful and challenging. We were fortunate with the weather, the rain holding off for most of the day but the wind provided some interesting challenges to the competitors.

Most of the competitors at the match do not have the opportunity to shoot at long range often, if at all. Indeed for some it was their first opportunity to shoot at these kind of ranges. We started off at 500yds and some good results were obtained in difficult wind conditions. For those unfamiliar with Glen Tilt a look at the picture above will show that the range lies in a steep sided glen. This results in the wind moving up the sides of the glen as well as along it. When sighting corrections are made a lateral correction usually requires an elevation correction at the same time.

While 500yds was quite successful 900yds proved too difficult for many with only a few hits registered on the target. Some competitors, John McRae, Fergus Highgate and David Craven in particular, rose above all this and produced excellent scores.

We had a short prizegiving at the end of the day. Winners of each class were presented with bottles of whisky and David Craven as the highest scorer of the day (other than a West Atholl club member) was also awarded a badge by the West Atholl Rifle Club to commemorate their Jubilee year.

For those who were there you will notice that I have amended the results slightly. John McRae now appears in the Historic Target Rifle class because I failed to allocate his lovely Long Lee Prize rifle to this more appropriate class.
