Scottish Historical Rifle Long Range Championships
Blair Atholl 12 August 2007
The sixth long range championships was held at the Jubilee Range, Glen Tilt by courtesy of the West Atholl Rifle Club. The days leading up to the match had seen constant rain but, as we assembled in the morning the rain stopped, the cloud lifted and the sun broke out. For most of the competition we were in brilliant sunshine with a heavy shower (accompanied by hordes of midgies) coming back to dampen the last detail.
This year the usual competitors from Scotland and England were joined by a group of shooters from Germany. Thomas Liley and his friends, all members of the Bund der Militar und Polizeischutzen (BDMP) made the trip specially to shoot with us. Despite being delayed in their arrival by the breakdown of their transport they were able to complete the whole competition with some impressive performances.
As usual we started off at 500yds in bright light with the gentle wind coming from the left and down the hill. Some good scores were put down with Hajo Iken taking the lead with a very fine 47.2 with his Swedish Mauser. In the Vintage Class David Whyte took an early lead with a solid 41 with his 45/70 Sharps rifle. In Veteran Class Jim McCall was in equally good form with a score of 40 with his Schmidt Rubin K31 and in Historic Target Rifle David Craven scored a very fine 46.2 with his SMLE.
At 900yds Hajo Iken continued in fine form with a score of 40.3 to take Classic Class managing to hold off a challenge from Hanno Boinhovet who scored 45 at the longer range. In Vintage Class David Whyte also held off a challenge from David Craven to take the class with an aggregate score of 71. Veteran Class went to Jim McCall with a consistently strong performance at both ranges and David Craven took Historic Target Rifle with a score of 73.4.
