The 127th Wapinschaw
2/3 Jun 2007
The 127th Aberdeen Wapinschaw took place on 2nd/3rd June 2007 with the civilian event on the Sunday. A strong entry of 33 competitors from all over Scotland and the North of England took part in the competition. The rain held off all day but the North-East coast's typical haar and a cold Southerly wind made conditions uncomfortably cold. The main competition consisted of Muzzle Loading, Quigley, Aggregate and 300yd Matches. On the Saturday evening, teams took part in the falling plates knockout tournament against OTC, TA and RAF Auxiliary Units.

Falling Plates Tournament
Three civilian teams took part in the Falling Plates match. Aberdeen Full Bore Gun Club fielded two home teams and hosted an All-Comers team from other clubs. The military teams were armed with the semi-automatic SA80 service rifle and civilian teams were armed with a variety of modern and classic rifles. All three AFBGC teams made it through the first round soundly beating their military opponents despite the apparent disadvantage of using manually operated rifles (accuracy made up for lack of rate of fire). AFBGC 'C' however, continued to beat all-comers before being knocked out in the final round by No 2622 [Highland] Squadron RAuxAF Regiment.

Main Meeting
The weather stayed cold on the Sunday and the haar never really lifted but conditions allowed a full day's shooting. The morning saw the muzzle loading and "Quigley" style shooting take place alongside the main Aggregate event while the afternoon allowed a full 300yd Match programme of 4 details.
Muzzle Loading and Quigley. Five competitors took part in the black powder matches. A strong performance in the small bore event saw David Craven take the title from last year's winner, Ken Watson. In the large bore event David Squires took the title with the stronger of his two shoots after Ken Watson withdrew from the match. Another strong showing saw David Whyte take the Quigley trophy for the third year in a row. The muzzle loading entry was down this year which was disappointing but this allowed a lane to be freed for late entry aggregate competitors to be fitted in.
Aggregate. The Vintage saw another third time winner in Jim McCall, taking the title with his Trapdoor Springfield. In the Classic Class David Whyte maintained his winning form taking the title with a strong score of 129. The Veteran Class went to Griff Elliott with a Mosin Nagant and a 21 point margin over the runner up. In the optical classes; the Sporting title went to Peter Sinclair and, for the second time but with a year out the Open title went to Don Robertson.
300yd Match. For the second year, the Iron Sights Class in the 300yd Match went to Jim McCall, shooting a P14. Optical Class went to Richard Cherrie and F Class to Peter Marshall.
